What type of Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

April 30, 2018

Your house is your castle, and if you’re like the majority of homeowners, finding Tampa window treatments that give you privacy and sound control to maintain your sanctuary is a concern. Any window treatment is preferable to a bare window. Yet there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, especially on specialty windows.

Improving Privacy on Non-Square Windows

Most large, rectangular windows in your home are a snap to cover with almost any window treatment like Tampa shutters, shades, or blinds.

You might encounter some situations when you need a particular style of window treatment to get the privacy you want. These might be:

  • Bathroom windows where excess moisture might ruin fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are long and thin where window treatments can be knocked around when you use the door.

  • Irregular windows such as arches, circular windows, bay windows, etc., where typical store-bought blinds and shades can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that can be difficult to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these cases, you’ll want window treatments that go above and beyond to add privacy to your house.

As a plus, shop around for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Top Window Coverings for Privacy

The most privacy-friendly window treatment we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when complete privacy and sound control is your goal. To let light in and see outdoors, just give the louvers a tilt. For high windows, you should keep the louvers tilted at an angle so light can enter but passersby can’t see in.

Plantation shutters are also perfect for specialty-shaped windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are moisture resistant, they’re an excellent choice for bathrooms.

Another window treatment that helps with privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up very little space above the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent any views from outside your home. Though they can’t be custom-fit to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from moisture-resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.

Window Treatments that Don’t Protect Your Privacy

While any window covering gives you at least some privacy, there are two that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add a light feeling to a room. Yet they’re fairly translucent and can be seen through fairly easily, particularly when it’s dark out.

Another product we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can break or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t completely close the blinds due to breakage, then they’re not doing you any favors for privacy.
