What Happens During Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Eric Ramsey

Before you choose what window treatment to get, some companies, like Sunburst, start out with an in-home consultation. By taking products to your home, we can demonstate how various window coverings would look with your decor. This conversation lets you envision your options and makes you feel satisfied with the end result.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how will bringing samples to your home enable you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Even though every in-home consultation is personalized, there are some things that you should experience.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Homeowners choosing between window treatment samples.

Start by scheduling an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make sure to show you a variety of options for your preferred treatment. We will also show alternatives, so you can be sure that your windows match your ideal.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and discuss what you want in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll ask about hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also want to know how the room is used and what style you are looking to attain. And it’s normal if you don’t know exactly what you want, as we’ll explain all your options.

You may have to see many different window treatments to discover which treatments match your decor and protects your windows. Most clients want to look at a few different treatments, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the best stain to match the room. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the shutter, shade, or blind, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll take percise measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in each room—even if you only need to fit treatments for a portion of the house. We do this because many of our clients want to get additional products with just a phone call. Finally, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Signs Of A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will perform an easy and enjoyable in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment rep. After all, the quality of the consultation mirrors the quality of the window treatments.

First, your rep should treat your home with respect. The rep should come to your house when promised, with all samples requested, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your representative should always have product and company literature and pricing details.

In regards to pricing, you should expect a complete written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, scrawled on a blank page or the back of a business card. And never accept pricing estimates before they take any window measurements. You need to know how much product and installation should cost. If a quote ever seems sketchy or unreasonable, simply ask for references and search for the store’s online reviews.
